Zone 04

The Storage Zone

The storage zone governs how you organise, label, and retrieve every ingredient in your kitchen. From pantry shelves to fridge drawers and container systems, smart storage eliminates the frustration of searching for items and reduces food waste dramatically.

Pantry Organisation

A well-organised pantry is the backbone of efficient meal preparation. Group items by category: grains and pasta, canned goods, baking supplies, oils and vinegars, spices, and snacks. Use shelf risers to maximise vertical space and keep items at the back visible. Clear-front containers make it easy to check stock levels at a glance without opening anything.

Place frequently used items (olive oil, salt, your go-to spices) at eye level. Bulk items and rarely used ingredients go on higher or lower shelves. Review your pantry weekly and move items approaching their expiry date to the front.

Fridge Zones

Your fridge has natural temperature zones that you should use strategically. The top shelves are the warmest -- ideal for drinks, leftovers, and ready-to-eat items. Middle shelves suit dairy products and eggs. The bottom shelf is the coldest, making it best for raw meat and fish. Crisper drawers maintain humidity for fruits and vegetables. The door is the warmest area, reserved for condiments and items with natural preservatives.

Container Systems

Transfer dry goods from their original packaging into uniform, airtight containers. This extends shelf life, prevents pests, saves space, and creates visual consistency that makes your pantry easier to navigate. Square or rectangular containers maximise shelf space better than round ones. Always label containers with the contents and the date you opened or stored them.

🏷️

Labeling System

Label every container, shelf, and zone. Use a label maker or write on masking tape. Include the item name and the date stored. This simple habit prevents mystery containers and reduces food waste.

Stackable Containers

Invest in a single brand of stackable containers with interchangeable lids. Uniformity saves enormous amounts of space and eliminates the frustration of mismatched lids.

Freezer Strategy

Freeze in flat, labelled bags for efficient stacking. Group items by type: proteins, vegetables, sauces, pre-made meals. Keep an inventory list on the freezer door so you always know what you have.

FIFO: First In, First Out

The FIFO method is a professional kitchen standard that dramatically reduces food waste at home. When you buy new groceries, place them behind existing items. Always use the oldest items first. This simple rotation system ensures nothing gets lost at the back of the fridge or pantry and expires unnoticed.
